I generally try to be a good person, but I struggle with the whole am doing good because I expect good things to happen to me for it thing, but there are times I do something and then later reflect on it and realise it was a good thing I did naturally.
It sounds rather /pol/ but I feel the slow death of good Christian values is sending people off course. Its not a religion thing, but more that the metaphors from those stories are lost on each generation that moves further away from spirituality.

It is certainly true that old school Protestants would be likely to respect the rule of law.
Respect for property rights and the rule of law are some of the inventions of western culture that allowed explosive growth of wealth and power. Look up Niall Ferguson. They are just tools for humanity - not that different from a hammer.
Sometimes of course you are morally obligated to break the law, but in general the idea works.
