Even after you leave the marines, you have to stay fighting fit and ready to re-deploy up to 3 years after returning to civilian life. Marines is not something you can up and walk out of when your term is up. When I went through OCS, nigs couldn't hang. Physical part they were good, classes they did ok, but the leadership tests and mind games fucked them up. For example I took the same test as a black 2 tour sergeant who was also a student at the citadel. I had no military experience. I found it easy and got a perfect grade on it, he got a 75%. Officers don't have contracts like enlisted, they have minimum obligation times. Basically the same thing. If they paid for your school or MOS specific schools the time required increases.
Technically all contracts are 8 years, it's usually split between active and IRR.
Fun fact as an officer, since you really don't have a contract, you can have your resignation denied even if you've served your minimum time. Doesn't happen very often but it is possible. They can keep you in as long as they want to.
