Honestly this is what I liked about the Craig films. They tried to do something more. I thought the older films were amusing and corny but I became more interested in more serious spy films. I thought the first two Bond films were good attempts at that and I could take them more seriously. A secret organization trying to get a monopoly on water isn't really so far fetched is it?
Skyfall and Spectre couldn't resist going back into giving nods to classic Bond though, in the end Spectre just seemed like a gigantic parody of itself.
If the films keep parodying previous films, what is the point anymore?
These days you get serious spy films which focus on more authentic espionage and you get parody films.
Problem is Bond doesn't fit either category, it can't be both, it has to be one or the other. Otherwise it's just a nostalgia series that is getting off on the good old days and isn't moving forward. Eventually it will stagnate, which is what I think happened in Spectre.
