Popular kids do have high self worth as they are socially (and likely academically and athletically) successful and that high self worth is being reinforced by other people. A 12 year old with neoliberal parents that hate themselves, country and race would perceive anyone with high self worth as a negative and therefore call them narcissistic, also probably learned this from parents who has love for themselves as being a narcissistic.

I heard a very similar quote a while back from some Turkish bitch from Germany I met at a BBQ that a stoner friend of my was hosting. She was a chubby, friendly vegetarian who nevertheless had the personality of a wet sock. She was studying law in Norway and spoke the language fluently, but she apparently mistook me for another lefty and started complaining about how all the "capitalist" girls were excluding her in school and how they only cared about fashion.
She's right about there being a lot of vain, stupid women who obsess about fashion, but that sure as fuck doesn't make them capitalists. I also don't blame them for avoiding her. She actually brought her homework out to the party (she lived in the apartment above my friend's with a bunch of other hippies and brown people), and started asking the guys at the party to help her look over it.
