I wasn't a racist until my mid-30s. Prior to that, I generally believed in multiculturalism, equality between the races and the importance of the individual and of human rights.
But life experience for years with people of different ethnicities (staring in my late 20s) taught me that they can have very very different values and worldviews, and that they didn't always have respect for the individual or even human rights. They often treated each other terribly, too - forget about people outside of their in-group. In the end, they fully lived up to the negative stereotypes that I had resisted and argued against during my teens and 20s. They re-educated me.
I'm not saying that such groups are genetically destined to be that way forever; it could just be culture. In any event, I avoid such people when I can. I defended them for nearly 20 years. But they won't even try to combat their own stereotypes. I guess, PR-wise, I got tired of doing all the heavy lifting for their race.

But I don't lack personal experience. I've lived in the ghetto up to age 14. Being 1 of 7 white males in my school, we were mercilessly picked on by fellow students and even teachers. I had fights were nearly every day.
History class was a fucking nightmare, as slavery was focused on the whole school year. This one time my teacher stated that ONLY Africans have ever been oppressed by slavery. Being a little contrarian, I checked the school's encyclopedias (pre-internet sucked) and found out about indentured servants and how many whites had suffered under a similar system. I wrote him a paper on it to try to show my solidarity in the African struggle and how white people too had suffered (let us into your club man) and he tore my paper up after reading it for like 2 seconds said "You fucking white people have never suffered under shit!" and grabbed me by my trapezius muscle and dragged into the principal's office. There were a couple more altercations with that teacher like that and nothing ever happened to him. He simply hated or strongly disliked me.
Despite those experiences I STILL don't hate blacks simply for being black.
I learned at a young age that blacks and whites are just different and it would be better for the both of us if we were apart.
