Well, most religious discussions lack substance, because it always comes down to the fact that none of us truely know whats going on. We all just choose what makes sense to us, and run with it. Some have chosen christianity, and others haven't. I am one of the "others", because i don't see any point in believing in something that we have yet to comfirm the existence of. Going back to when I said Christians are degenerate: I stand by this because reason should always override emotions. Most theists justify their beliefs through their feelings, rather than logic. I can guarantee you that there are innumerable Christians who are in the same boat as you. Church attendance has dropped heavily in the past few years, but the number of people who claim to be Christian hasn't dropped nearly as fast. This seems to be contradicting claims, but the majority of people who claim to be Christian in the West today are only culturally Christian. They sympathize with a lot of the ideals proposed in religious texts, but they can't believe in a higher power.
The reason why Christianity spread so fast throughout Europe was because of the unrelenting support and childlike obedience that these people had. These people genuinely believed that there was a God, and regardless of the indignities or torture that they received, they were going to Heaven. Most modern people don't feel this way, and I think that you're mistaking modern Christianity ideals with how Early Christians felt. They were the only people who had true faith in God, and most present day people are culturally Christian.

Religion and science should work together and neither should be held in higher regard than the other. Theoretically, we could play gods, splicing DNA and inventing whole species, new ways of killing people and vaporizing cities, and new ways of influencing and even controlling minds. Religion, when correctly applied, will tell us whether we should do any of those. When the two are divorced from each other or one is held in higher regard, you get either inquisitions or the threat of nuclear war.
