When you watch a sci-fi movie of a spaceship entering a planets atmosphere, you'll always notice that upon approaching a "sphere" every scene always cuts to a flat horizon, even if a spaceship arrived horizontally to the planet.....it doesn't matter how large the surface area is, the mass will still be sideways.
