Historically the #1 female chess player is Judit Polgar and she's a huge celebrity in her native Hungary, where, I suspect, there have been films made about her; she's featured in a lot of documentaries anyway. At her prime she was a top 10 player in the world.
The current best female player is named Hou Yifan, she's 21 and obviously extremely talented with a 2650 fide rating - over 1000 points ahead of this talented chess queen from Africa, though she's Chinese so nobody cares most likely.
