Development of technology would stall without governments supporting the scientist. iPhone is full of tech made in government funded research institutions, universities and companies. A lot of the corporations are actually very conservative because of muh.. share holders.

a) EU funding is a magical piggy bank that never runs out. Brexit would lower funding for at least a while, and these career academics would be out of a job. They're basically glorified freelancers living off the EU's teat.

Most scientists are part of the intelligentsia, they have a disdain for ordinary working men and women who they believe should be ruled by superior unaccountable members of the elite (i.e themselves).
The funding they EU gives them provides them a cushy life in academia, never having to grow up in the real world post university study. They don't see the struggle and impact of what EU immigration has done to parts of the country from their ivory towers and all expenses paid conference dinners.
If the work was that important private sector enterprise would pick up the research.

I study physics at uni and your average student is just as likely to be bluepilled as anyone else. The EU is much more generous with it's scientific funding than the UK government has been historically. The government wants to see fast returns on investments which a lot of scientific fields won't be able to produce.
