Having a US colony on your border isn't fun, they've seen that much in eastern Europe. Massive NATO troop concentrations everywhere, hundreds of planes, missiles, and anti-missile shit everywhere alongside the western Russian border. China doesn't want that directly on its border and I can't blame them for it.
Also, by keeping North Korea in its sphere of influence, China has access to the massive rare earth metal deposits there in addition to its own deposits in China. It allows China to have near-complete control over this strategic resource.
