Rangers are essentially elite infantry of the US Army.
The ranger school is difficult to pass but selection for acceptance into the ranger regiment is highly competitive even if you do great if you don't out compete those around you, you will not be accepted.
Rangers take on the more difficult missions in the combat operations we conduct, such as airport seizures, and the leadership singular in mind.
They will constantly try to break you while you're there, but when at war you will kill everything you see.
Also about your question on education. Do not get higher education, go straight into the army, take that time to save your money and get your GI bill after you leave the military you'll live a fairly good life. If responsible with your finances.

If you want the more respected route, go junior enlisted first work to become a sergeant then submit a packet for the officer academy.
In the meantime, yes you can work on a degree while serving, its easier if you do it online.
The reason why the Rangers have a low mortality rate for now is that they rely on the basics of military strategy striking the weak spots of the enemy with the element of surprise, kill everything, then get out.
It is also because we are currently fighting not so well trained enemies fighters. In a more serious fight like against China or Russia the mortality rate will of course increase.

Because the Aussie navy don't have an amphibious infantry unit like the Royal marines, and because if i wanted to go for SASR i'd have to be in the Aus Millitary for like 18 months i think it is before you can apply, but even then i have no interest in joining the SASR i only want to be a Marine.
