When I was younger, I had a lock-picking hobby. This on its own is not a problem, as lock-picking is not inherently illegal, and when I got into it, illicit activities were not what I had in mind. As young men tend to do, I eventually decided I was super cool and broke into a university one night. All was well, but I neglected to cover my face, and there were security cameras. A week or so later, a detective questioned me at work. I was scared shitless, but not wanting to be difficult, I was completely honest with the guy. He appreciated my honesty, and thanks to him and the prosecutor (I set up a meeting and was similarly respectful) my charges were dropped from felony burglary to misdemeanor "entering or surreptitiously remaining." I ended up with a 500$ fine, but considering what could have happened, I am happy how things turned out.
Cops are just people. Treat them politely and they will do what they can for you. Hell, the guy never even arrested me, he called me up a week after the interview and asked me to turn myself in--which I did.

Because in most of the developed world, crazy people are allowed to be detained if they are a danger to other people OR themselves. This isn't 100% coverage, though; in New York state for example, you're allowed to be crazy as you want and it's legal to kill yourself, as long as you pose no danger to anybody else. In these places you are generally asked if you want to be committed to an asylum or mental health ward if you try and fail to kill yourself.
