They essentially split Iberia in thirds during the Reconquista. Castile and Portugal became kind of friends. Castile and Aragon unified, creating Spain. Spain tried to annex you like once or twice I forget, but failed because muh Portugal nationalism.
One attempt was the Napoleonic Wars, where Spain occupied Portugal with France's help. This ended when France betrayed and invaded Spain (for no reason) and Spain and Portugal became allies by necessity.
Same cultural, lingual, and religious backgrounds but you were separated by essentially just circumstance. It's kind of like how Austria and Germany should really just be one unified Germany, but Austria is independent for historic/political reasons.
