The metric system is better for scientists, but that's it. Regular citizens don't worry about needing to convert from feet to miles, because nobody fucking converts from feet to miles. Seriously, when was the last time you needed to know how fast your faggy cars go in cm/h? How about from meters to cm? That might actually be relevant, but imperial units are MUCH better at small, common conversions because inches are base 12. One third of a foot is 4 in., one third of a meter is 33.3333cm. One sixth of a foot is 2 in., one sixth of a meter is 16.6666cm.. Imperial units also have the advantage of being more easily visualized, because they're based on the human body rather than pure numbers (which are, ironically, more arbitrary than imperial units).

For example, no one in their right mind takes a look at the ASTM standard pipe chart, then calls up a supplier and ask for 508mm throttle valve, it's just done in inches. The reason old wholesome units have to be thrown out is because everyone came up with slightly different ones.
In some places every /city/ had its own system of measurement, held up by the city hall for traditional trade regulation.
Besides, for the purposes of negotiating everyone to switch to the same system a system that is no one's culture or tradition is ideal. You see how much people get hung up on how "French" the metric system is, although in reality it's international. For example, Americans and British had a lot of work done on it.
