What most religious people want to do is reaffirm their own belief and convert others. Millions of christians, muslims, and others go out each day and "preach the word". One of their biggest priorities is adding to their numbers.
So, while they may not particularly care about proving the existence of god, they should care about proving that their belief system is the correct one. What's the point of joining a religion if it's the wrong one?
