>"Democracy was a mistake" - Plato

Well, /pol/, do you agree?
>>
His only example was Athenian democracy which was shit
>>
Yes. Democracy allows stupid people to vote.
>>
Democracy sucks when you let uneducated niggers and the lower class vote.
>>
how can anyone who read the Republic think that Plato was in favor of a democracy?
>>
>>73565064
plato was a dumbass. that faggot had a hard-on for monads even though aristotle proved they were stupid. plus his idea of the forms was inherently contradictory. his only value as a philosopher was to show us how to ask questions. he didnt provide us with any answers
>>
>tfw hes referring to a different democracy than we have now
>>
>>73565064
Eh... it is rather shit but at the same time would it be any different? Unless you had a Hitler tier autist who loved his people in charge it would still be the same zog bullshit.
>>
Democracy alone is a mistake. It's a horrible system. Constitutional republics are the best we've got right now.
>>
>>73565064
The governmental system described in The Republic was an allegory for the soul and meant to sound absurd
>>
>>73565174
>>73565386
But in a broader sense, dont you agree.
>>
>>73565605
He was just pissed off that the Athenians killed Socrates. Plato knew very little about running a practical state and The Republic proves it, the system he describes is a complete dystopia. It was most likely an allegory on the soul and the sacrifice becoming a philosopher requires. Look to Aristotle and his views on politics if you want a comprehensive and practical alternative to democracy
>>
>>73566255
Ok, I see what you mean.
But lets talk about Democracy itself, wouldnt it be better if only educated people were allowed to vote?
Shouldnt we just treat dumber/less educated people as children and let intellectuals do the thinking?
Or would more educated people tend to benefit themselves and disregard the wellbeing of the dumber ones?
>>
>>73565341
The forms are the basis of right intellect. They are what guides thought towards anything useful instead of nihilism.

>But lets talk about Democracy itself, wouldnt it be better if only educated people were allowed to vote?
That's essentially what ancient greek democracy was though, instead of a representative democracy it was a direct democracy but only well educated land owning males could vote. In modern times we would call it a Timocracy.

Plato viewed Timocracy as a degeneration of an aristocratic type of government by an even more select class. In many way a representative democracy is quite aristocratic, we elect well educated elites to rule over us instead of a stable ruling class though
>>
The weight one's vote has should be proportional to their wealth
>>
He's speaking of a true democracy, which is shit. We have a hybridized democracy, believe it has shifted towards socialistic democracy or some shit like that. Was supposed to be a republic but we threw that out.
>>
>>73567641
>The weight one's vote has should be proportional to their weight.

t. Ameriburger
>>
>>73567641
>the 1% now own 90% of the votes
it's okay, the hyper rich will totally vote with the well being of the serfs in mind!

>Brazil in charge of anything every
>can't even stage a decent coup
>>
>>73567753
>Hueland flag
>ameriburguer

I think wealth is a good way to measure one's contribution to society, and it's also going to be a good way to disincentive tax evasion.
>>
>>73565064
No. Socrates was a faggot and the entire basis for why Plato hated Democracy.
>go to trial
>okay Socrates, some faggots are accusing you of blasphemy towards the gods and corrupting the youth. We know you may or may not have done it so what do you have to say about that
>ok, yes, thanks. So, firstly, the guy who accused me of those charges is a piece of shit so fuck him
>vote come off 50/50 on whether Socrates is guilty
>got anything else to say Socrates if you're guilty?
>mainly, that if I'm found guilty, I should be given meals for the rest of my life, paid for by the state hahahahaha. But seriously, I'm poor as fuck and I don't want to go into exile because that's just stupid and I'd lose my influence. Oh, wait, I'm sorry, I'm getting a message from Plato and the youth I've been corrupting that they'll pay the charges for me, so I guess I'll go with that
>guilty
>well fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you. History will see that you were all evil fucks and that you were wrong wrong wrong! And I'm going to commit to killing myself to prove that you faggots were wrong and that democracy sucks
Fuck Socrates.
>>
Democracy, like socialism, only works in a homogenous soceity

Aka niggers/Jews bad news
>>
>>73567901
A proportion doesn't imply solely on direct proportions, it could be an exponential function with a limit set to something around 1000 votes.
>>
>>73567753
Isn't it how it used to be though? Your vote only counted if you had land, influence and money. This is essentially why women were allowed to vote.
>>
>>73568106
>>guilty
Oh forgot to add
>guilty, we force you to kill yourself for being a faggot
>>
>>73565174
Also, there isn't a single form or way to conduct democracy. Democracy, as a whole, can be molded into a more serviceable instrument. Democracy can help create a strong state and economy so long as certain specification are held.
Those are
>strong state
>working judicial system'
>high voting percentage from the population (meaning they're interested in the policies)
>somewhat free market
Among other things. Demoracy is a good system but a flawed one. By itself, it's completely worthless. If you want to see the absolute failings of democracy and political systems, just check and read the historical political growth of South American nations.
Every political system, from communism, neoliberal, to populism, to neopolulism, to democratic socialism has occurred in one form or another in South America and broken down.

Democratic republicanism is like a game of musical chairs. The public officials gain a temporary privileged position for a short period of time where they choose to pilfer the coffers or improve the system. Though some remain honorable, a person takes care of their own things better than another's.

None of your listed benefits are contingent on democracy to exist.
>>
Democracy is a mistake if borders are not controlled. also the concept of a 'party' is pretty ridiculous and only fractures countries
>>
Yes. A full democracy is a mistake. A republic is not. What we had originally put in place by our founding fathers was extremely well thought out. We just fucked it over because of political power grabs. Having government officials so close to the people allows them to be held accountable for thejr choices and actions which is good. But when people are being retarded, a good official can execute a decision on his own.
