HOW?
1 board into 2 pieces = 1 cut
That 1 cut took 10 minutes.
if she worked just as fast to cut another board into 3 pieces, then that is 2 cuts, if 10 minutes each.

>>
>>73537823
Do you not see how fucking stupid that is?
>>
>>73537586
It's a simple problem to teach the concept. Being able to quickly do estimates is an important skill. But to teach it you can't start off with complex problems. You start simple to build to the complex.
>>
>>73537823
Math isn't about being 'vague'.

Hope America enjoys the next generation of engineers.
>>
>>73537296
The first problem (I think) is meant to be read as 5 groups of 3, so while the answer is right, the teacher wanted them to show work in the way they practiced. The kid got it backwards.
If this logic follows into the next problem, then it should be 4 rows and 6 columns, not 4 columns and 6 rows.
I know it sounds silly, but the teacher wasn't testing the ability to do math, but rather the child's ability to read and correctly interpret math problems.
>>
>>73537396
because the teacher is getting "cuts" and "pieces" confused.
The teacher is thinking 10 minutes for 2 cuts, so it would be 15 for three cuts.
The teacher is just speedreading
>>
>>73536572
Except how we all do math mentally is different.

That isn't intuitive at all to me because what I would do is

26 + 17

( 20 + 10 ) + ( 6 + 7)
30 + 13

43

It scales well with large numbers too and I didn't need anybody to teach me it. This stupid shit is ridiculous.
>>
>>73537823
But if the student can do mental math without having to use "friendly numbers," why penalize him for that?

It's just weighing him down. Attempting to force him to conform to the lowest common (friendly) denominator, rather than encouraging and nurturing his natural abilities and superior intellect.

>>
>>73535749
This might seem retarded at first but it's because 17+26 is a simple problem that most people can do in their head without the unnecessary steps but when you're working with larger numbers say 1775+1039. It makes sense to add 39 and to 1775 and subtract it from 1039 to simplify the problem. There's also a trick to find the value of a square but this trick may seem retarded when working numbers 1-15 because most people already know those squares or can do them mentally without a trick. But the trick is this say I want to find a the square of a number around 50 then I do this (50+y)^2=2500 + 100y + y^2. If I want 47^2 plug in -3 for y. This we have 2500 -300 + 9=2209. In my opinion this is faster than trying to brute force it and it helps students think in a different way. Another classic example of finding simpler computation methods that may seem dumb at first for small numbers is how gauss calculated the sum of the natural numbers from 1 to 100.
>>
>>73537899
If you cannot instantly add 5 to 27 you will not be using formulas for anything any time soon anyway.

common core was implemented via no child left behind.

conservative news:
http://www.usnews.com/opinion/knowledge-bank/2015/12/09/we-didnt-need-to-replace-no-child-left-behind-with-every-student-succeeds

Of course, there are also several No Child Left Behind-linked practices that have grown increasingly unpopular with either educators or parents (or both), including the widespread adoption of the Common Core, a trend toward more-focused teacher evaluation, more prevalent standardized testing and an uptick in school turnaround strategies that don't seem to yield much.

hipster news:
http://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2014/05/27/307755798/the-common-core-faq

3) Why do we need the Common Core?

Several arguments have been made in favor of creating a single set of expectations for what students should know and be able to do:

No Child Left Behind, a federal law, mandated that all states give annual tests in grades 3-12 to ensure that all students were proficient. However, each state chose its own test and its own definition of proficiency. So, in practice, the numbers couldn't really be compared from state to state. In theory, with the Common Core come common definitions of proficiency for each grade, allowing for clearer comparisons of how kids are doing from state to state and school to school.

there's other news sources like forbes and washington post but they're under paywalls.

its much easier to just think "ok 30 + 30 + 14" or even 40 + 34.

nobody ever taught me the common core stuff but some people literally never learn these shortcuts which really help simplify math at an early age which is important to ensure that they dont just give up when they havent even gotten to multiplication yet

Neither NCLB nor ESSA were common core bills.
They were just bills which had particular issues which individual states attempted to solve by enacting common core.

There is no federal law requiring common core, that's why 8 states (7 which are republican) don't have any form of it.

You need two rounds of sawing to get a board into three pieces. If you assume they want pieces with an equal surface - there is no reason to assume otherwise - and it takes 10 minutes per round of sawing, then 20 minutes is right and 15 minutes is wrong. But here's the thing - it's not about right or wrong. It's about control. It's about them being able to set a subjective standard that students must comply with regardless of whether the standard is right or wrong. It's like the system of education that the Prussian government implemented in the nineteenth century - meant not to exercise or use the human mind, but to create a loyal caste of young footsoldiers who will not question whatever dogma you feed them.

>>73537823
If the student was given a task and a time limit, and managed to work it out in full detail within that time limit, why complain except as a means of control, to establish roles of dominance and submission? That isn't even how common core teaches it and you should be able to do that because in school you learn about the properties of math.

x + y = z

We are trying to find z, but technically the equation I put holds true as long as you duplicate every operation you do.

For example this is the same problem

(x + a) + (x - a) = z

Once you understand that, which you should in elementary school, the "tricks" are not tricks, it's just doing fucking math.

They should teach children to do math correctly on paper so that when they're 21~ and sitting in University, they don't need to learn how.

well no shit you need to be smart to do actual college math. i got a 4 on my ap calc exam but that shit doesn't mean im good at math.

>>73539016
yeah but you arent thinking about it from a mental math perspective.

lets say you need to add 357 + 308 in your head really quickly which im assuming is the ultimate goal of this common core stuff, which is increased speed and efficiency in the long term.

if you want to do x + y = z ok sure some people can just instantly say 357+348 = 705.

but the way we would've most likely learned it without common core, youd have to think (ok carry over the 5 , then carry over the 1, etc.

i'm not that smart so I would have to think it out and or just draw it out which im sure anyone can do.

but with common core it becomes alot easier, all you need to do is take 2 from 357, so then you end up with 350 + 350 + 5 = 705. you can do that shit so quickly in your head you dont even need the calculator
>>
>>73535749

>>
Guy who's wife is a 3rd grade teacher and helps her grade papers here.

Some common core shit is retarded, I know. But all these images you guys are posting aren't fair. You need to know the context of the problems, you don't have that when you cut out the heading. For the 8 + 5 problem, that whole sheet is probably an exercise on estimation and grouping. Like if I said hey what's 385 plus 253? In your head you would probably do 300 + 200 + 80 + 50 + 5 + 3 or something similar, instead going uhhhh ok 5 + 3 is 8 and 5 + 8 is 13 ok so 3 and carry the one... But young kids have to start with one digit numbers where it doesn't make much sense to group things or estimate yet since (to us at least) it's so easy.
>>
>>73534239
/Pol/ I really expected better from you all. Common Core is not as bad as you make it out to be. Did you know that Common Core does NOT make or publish textbooks, workbooks, or questions of any sort? Have any of you actually read through the Common Core standards?

All you posted was a question without any context (Though it does appear to be from a unit covering estimation). If anything the biggest problem is that Jew publishing companies all jumped on the common core bandwagon and pushed out textbooks as quickly as they could for ultimate shekels. This is were a lot of misconceptions have arisen. I invite you to read through the common core math standards, and find something wrong with them.

this prevents them from even trying for fear of failure and looking stupid and they just end up falling more and more behind in math.

will this mental math help you out in calculus? maybe(probably) not.

but atleast you will (hopefully) learn math with these common core tricks and not give up half way through division so that you can actually have the confidence to realize that math isnt that hard.

Thanks for illustrating you are retarded.

>I'm not that smart

You aren't. The common core stuff is literally the x+y = z example I put up there.

The things you do to one number, as long as they are done inversely to the other number retain equivalence.

5 + 5 = 10
x + x = y

(5 - 3) + (5 + 3) = 10
(x - z) + (x + z) = y

Telling kids strategies to do mental math like this is fine, but enforcing them to do your stupid pattern because you like it best is retarded. You can do it a plethora of different ways.

The way I learned how to do that math problem is to solve the problem, but I can also solve it in my head which is different from how I would solve it on paper and how they would tell me to solve it.

( 8 + 7 = 8 + (8-1) = 16 )
+
(40 + 50 = 90)
= 105 + ( 300 + 300) = 705

I don't find the nearest number, I just separate every tens spot and add all that together. The only number that will ever not be a tens is the last one, so it's very easy.

Unfortunately my way of mentally doing math is wrong because I didn't subtract by 7 then add them, so despite the fact I exemplified that I understand the process behind addition and the rules of it and how to creatively use those rules, it's wrong because I didn't do what the teacher said even though my answer was right.

Best way to teach children.

I just taught him how to cross multiply fractions to solve the problem and he got them all right and understand exactly what I had taught him.

He went to school and the teacher literally threw his paper away and told him it was trash because he didn't do the problems right. I wish I was making shit up on 4chan but that happened. It made my mom mad so she complained to the principle. Luckily, the principle made an agreement with my mom where his work would then be graded by the principle and not the teacher and I just taught my brother math that year.

Maybe. But when asked if the correct answer is reasonable you should not be demerited for answering 'yes.'

this is okay desu. It's just trying to encourage mental maths, albeit in a really silly roundabout way.

This is the part that confuses me.

Remove the constraints and I can give you a ten thousand page answer that reaches 10.

No wonder Americans are fucking failing at math.

>teacher asks you to show work
>dont show work
>HURR DURR DURR THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN

Holy fuck. Also, your method of simplifying is exactly the fucking point of the exercise, and also what I was talking about. So good job there

It is stupid. I figured out how to use numbers in my mind during the first few minutes of calculation in the math-lesson.

Is the standard Nigger even too dumb to calculate in his head?

I understand you're british, so this must be hard for you. In the US, we do not use the verb "take" to indicate subtraction.

>Take 2 from 5
5 = 2 + 3
>then add it to 8
8 + 5 = 8 + 2 + 3 = 10 + 3
>then add 3
10 + 3 = 13

I'm sure that this lesson sounds weird for someone coming from an outside perspective, but it probably makes sense in relation to how she taught the class. She's just teaching them short cuts with addition.

Back in 2008 no one would have believed that shit, but here on /pol/ you seems to eat that shit up without second thought.
