There is one thing to be said here related to football though, and it's that they could use some strategy where they focus left or right, or split the middle, and they're not doing it. It means if your opponent is spread straight across the field and you swing left, you crash into their right flank with overwhelming force and there's nowhere they can go to avoid it. The thing is, your guys on the exposed flank need to know they're going to take a pretty big hit and be ready for it. It would be more interesting and historically accurate if they actually made the guys try to fight in some sort of formation, rather than just running around shoving each other and hitting each other with blunt weapons constantly.
Also, to discourage people from swinging like maniacs and tiring themselves out (because they know the rounds don't last long), they winner should have to immediately fight the next team they're scheduled to fight (who would also have just finished their match).
This would encourage them to actually fight more realistically, using actual fencing techniques and sparring moves to prevent fatigue.

Their way of dealing with a direct blow is to simply take it, or make a half-assed attempt at blocking with their arm. They do this because they know that they only "lose" if they touch the ground. That's not how it works in real life, idiot.
And especially so in the case of men-at-arms, battles were fought through formations. For anyone less than a knight, their knowledge of swordplay and warfare wasn't advanced enough to be able to survive out of formations. This is why things like halberds were developed: to give levies a chance against organized groups of knights. Safety in numbers.
