The problem is that half of them are just undiagnosed autists. They have highly rigid internalized definitions of gender roles, which they project onto other people and themselves. You know how furries and otherkin think that they're really wolves based on flimsy emotions that they assume are animalistic? They'll say they must have wolf spirits because like to be alone, they like cartoons, they like meat, they get angry and grit their teeth or growl sometimes, etc. Most people consider these to be normal feelings, but autists can't reconcile them with however they assume humans "should" act, so they latch onto another identity that feel better explains their actions
Trans are just another shade of this. It's not a coincidence that those with gender dysphoria are 10 times more likely to be on the autism spectrum. Most people with autism suffer from rigid thinking, shoehorning themselves and other people into specific roles and getting extremely frustrated when people don't follow their expectations. In the case of furries, they see humans as rational and animals as wild and irrational- so when they can't explain their own mood swings they assume they must be a WILD FOX.
In the case of trans, they usually develop (or are subjected to) rigid gender roles. They find themselves enjoying dolls, or sports, or something that 'shouldn't match their gender and develop a massive sense of shame over it. So they spend years overcompensating, trying to live up to their comically high hurdle of how a man/woman should act. Or they live on as an aspie weirdo, getting bullied for being the annoying kid who won't shutup about Sailor Moon. In either case, internal or external anguish makes suicide more appealing, because they're cursed with the fallacy that their behavior is incompatible with their biological sex
