It's based on a really good book from the colonial expansion into Congo. Book's called Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. Even though the book is good, the movie is waaay better. Usually I find three hour long movies to be an unecessary extended time and typically it's because they're poorly editted, but not this movie, it didn't loose my attention at any point.

As for his films being better as books I will admit to not having read them. I'm aware King didn't like the Shining, the main reason I think he gave was the wife seemed like a misogynistic character, I kind of disagree and anyway not enough to make it a bad movie at all given everything else - seems like sour grapes for the film being better esteemed than the book. His direction seems pretty flawless and beautiful and hard to fault to me if not in other movies just Eyes Wide Shut for example. There are directors respected by the industry that i think are overrated, I know that feel, so agree to disagree?
