Slaves were a one-time payment (I don't know if leasing was a thing back then), but I understand what you're getting at.
Nothing wrong with wanting to make a profit. The problem was that the government got cucked into releasing them all.

Cotton and slavery was on its way out. It just took way too long and way too many man hours to be economical. But the invention of the Cotton gin made slavery economically viable and the south revolved around that one industry. Feeding the appetite of the British and Northern textile mills.
Its not a question of why we had to get slaves to pick cotton but rather the cotton and new technology made the traditional slavery possible again.
If the time between the two events had been longer we may have very well seen a system of feudal labor that involved rich white land owners and indentured white immigrant servants.
