They're no strangers to finding a way around boarder defenses. So I think that spending a huge amount of money on a solution that MIGHT work to a problem that is going away isn't a good idea.

Giving in to America's demands would be good from a diplomat's standpoint. And if you read Trump's book, he has a part where he explains this in detail.. the idea is to put forth a brash first statement, then follow up by toned down, sensible statements. Same principle. Once it goes to the discussions, Mexico will probably pay half, and Trump will paint it in the media as an act of goodwill on his part, all part of the deal of course.
And since it's a vanity project for America, Mexico can pay half and get a brand new border with a strong ally protecting it.. it can even remove its own maintenance, and let the Americans run it, which they will because it's Trump wall.
