It seems two faced, but the language itself is to a degree non-confrontational. The conventions of actual speaking, even more so. It's impolite to tell shit to people's faces or even demand things of people. It's an implicit language. Like even basic shit, when you ask someone for directions, you don't just ask a stranger for directions. You approach them in the polite way and mention you are going somewhere with a trailing sentence. They're supposed to pick up on that and give you directions without you directly asking them.
It's just the way it is, no matter how inefficient and odd it seems to us. If you're doing something impolite, no one is going to directly confront you, they're going to hint that you are in a nice and polite way. Unless they're friends or someone directly above you (like at work, but I'm not 100% sure on that) If they're talking shit behind your back it means you were too stupid to realize what you did wrong and pick up on what they were trying to tell you.

Nah it's true, we really don't have the restraint Europeans do. It's nice in a way, especially in rural areas of the states because people can be so open and hospitable without the dressings of some kind of formality. Some of them really do treat guests the same way they treat their own families. They're just also not afraid to do the exact opposite and spit fire if you cross the wrong lines.
Of course that's just certain parts of the country. I live in the northeast so we're not really like that. It's kind of sad in my state where people are so impersonal and not neighborly. For everyone who wants to know who this guy is, he's called Ryan Boundless (his youtube), and yeah he's your generic guy who went to Japan to teach English. But fuck knows why he went, because he isn't actually a weeb. I think he just wanted an adventure but he's a fucking miserable cunt.
I found his channel a couple of years ago and it's been hilarious as I swear in his videos it was like watching him gradually become more and more suicidal as he complained about the same shit.
The J-Vloggers on youtube don't like him either because whilst they all made shitty gimmicky videos with your typical weeb shit (you know the kind of stuff I mean, the graphics, the shitty music, the over enthusiastic waving), he would just create gritty videos complaining about the shit Japanese people do.
They were actually informative videos and they were pretty helpful if you're interested in hearing some unfiltered perspectives that aren't viewed through weeb goggles.
The absolute madman finally left and is now trying his luck in Thailand, which is really even more perverted. Crazy thing is he was actually doing well in Japan by the end, even had a long term girlfriend.
Bottom line is, the guy is very pessimistic and whines a lot about a lot.

The only reason why I'd ever want to visit Japan is due to their interest in technology - mainly robotics and AI. Attend a seminar. Even then I'd probably just stay for few months top.
