Multi-billion dollar research, development and approval costs for a cure for a rare disease which is transmitted primarily through dirty needles.

In order to recoup the costs you have to charge that much especially when you consider the majority of sufferers never will be able to afford it regardless of the price.

I'm sure this has nothing to do with the fact that American pharma companies have to spend a decade and billions on development, research, and testing so that a generic can be sold to shitty poor countries like India.

>leftists completely failing to understanding the economics of this

They're basically leeching off Americans

India ignores patents for drugs created in USA and makes knockoffs for cheap, basically stealing a fucking shitload of money from American companies and patients.

Americans are stuck with paying high prices to cover the billions of $ in R&D

Drugs aren't fucking cheap. It costs like $2,600,000,000+ and 12 years of research on average to develop a new drug and many never even get approved and make it to market.

Countries like India just steal the drug and don't contribute to the R&D at all (which is the main expense by far for real drug companies that actually create instead of steal).

This is they main reason they won't join TPP, becuase it would force them to stop stealing our IP and allow us to sue them if they fail to do so.

>>
>>73311540

Those billions don't go into the actual R&D, they go to the shareholders. Drug discovery is usually free from universities, they have millions more drugs than they can test. Then a smaller company will do initial tests for about $100,000, if it shows promise then big pharma comes in and buys the whole company, giving a massive payday. Then testing begins but if 2billion went to the actual researchers they could hire 3000 researchers for 12 years which isn't what happens. Most goes to sales.

after thousands of different drug candidates have been synthesized, brought into clinical trials for years of testing, and then finally approved, drug companies can then make the drug for often cents per gram in terms of cost of material.

so after investing years and years of research, costing literally billions of dollars, and after having looked at thousands of compounds, they have a route to one drug with a known profile.

and then some faggot chemists in china and india see the structure of the drug and just synthesize it themselves without ever having spent a dime on the research needed to get there.

and so they can sell it for next to nothing. but without the pharma company, that drug would never have existed.

>>73308481
Sorry, but this is just capitalism. Nothing else.

Pharma companies can charge what they want for pills. The problem is that insurance companies are forced to pay for this shit. And patent laws allow pharma companies to charge whatever they want until the patent runs out.

Well no shit, third world countries like India, Brazil, etc. just copy the drug after someone else has already done all the development. They just have to cover the manufacturing cost, and not the years of product development, clinical trials, etc.

youre right about the gold yachts for executives, but it is the R&D too.

thats the reason me and half the people i know are employed, unless you think im part of a conspiracy. although the market sucks as of recently due to the gold yacht you mention
>>
>>73313784

the collaboration between universities and pharma companies with respect to R&D is sickening- pharma companies fund research at universities so they can pay grad students $25k/yr for 80+hrs/week to do their work, without having to hire full time $120k/yr 40hr/week scientists.

its a reason the job market sucks for synthetic chemists

>pharmaceutical companies n-need to recoup their massive R&D investment

Except pharmaceutical companies already make huge profit margins, and actually spend more on marketing than on research.

Now folks, listen. We spend billions- BILLIONS- on healthcare. Obamacare is a disaster for so many reasons, but number one- THE NUMBER ONE REASON- is that these politicians, they sign bills to pay $20 a pill, or $50 a bandaid, or something like that.
And I know what you're saying, everyone says it, how are they this stupid? The truth is that they're not stupid- they're bought and paid for by the pharmaceutical companies. PFIZER- pfizer, people, pays tons of money to our politicians and now wants to move to Ireland! But anyway, so they pay the politicians, and these crooked politicians- like crooked hillary, for example- goes in and makes a bill to lower costs but then they get a phone call- and the voice says
>uh, your PAC called and they want you to withdraw suppoet or they won't keep supporting you
And they wanna stay in, so they do!
Companies get people to do what they want, wether it's in trade agreements or construction or whatever because of this.
That's why I'm proud to say that I am self-funding my campaign, folks, this isn't going to happen anymore!
>>
>>73316450
Insulin is a great market, no ads needed as ppl would die without it. here there is no advertising for Rx drugs. competition does push prices down and often the drug with the better risk/effect ratio is covered by healthcare providers.
it's a complicated process to manufacture many drugs. of course the shareholders want shekels, but big pharma has lots of employees and subcontractors. here 3 external jobs are secured by one pharma employee.
