South Korea doesn't need the US, Best Korea is not a real threat and SK military has been itching for an excuse to crush them once and for all. The US "providing protection" is just the US wanting to have as many military bases as they can all over the world. Having military bases in east asia close to China and Russia is kinda of a big deal.
