Most of you guys aren't old enough to remember 1980s hockey (and the decade before that) when the NHL was WIDE OPEN in respect to style of play, had high scoring, and most importantly, had unique characters.
It's been thoroughly corporatized and sanitized and rendered DULL AS FUCK.
The league has too much parity due to the salary cap and the game hasn't introduced the necessary changes to reflect the physical changes in the players. The guys now are monsters compared to the players of the 70s and 80s and are much faster and stronger. This means incredibly tight-checking and very conservative tactics are necessitated by the lack of open ice space. The main effect is the destruction of individual creativity as players don't have any time on the puck like they did before. These guys today are much, much more technically proficient as opposed to the often sloppy play of those previous decades, but it's come at the cost of excitement, character, blowouts, dynasties, etc.
We won't be seeing another early 80s Islanders team, nor late 70s Habs, much less Gretzky's Oilers.
