A department at a company I used to work for hired one guy who didn't know Swedish. All meetings were held in English instead and I never heard anyone complain about it. The guy picked up Swedish eventually and it was probably useful to him, but if he hadn't planned on staying in Sweden there really wouldn't have been any point to it.

If the Danes have a system like ours you get to choose between Spanish, German and French in upper secondary and high school. The vast majority find Spanish more useful since it's more spoken than French or German and English is less spoken in Spanish-speaking areas.

Æ Ǿ and Å are not difficult for non-Germanics and Anglos to understand because they're a new letter, but because the transliterations to English are not really accurate. OE is just the closest possible sound you could make in English, it isn't an accurate representation.

Well, that's exactly what makes it "hard". Someone who's interested in Scandinavian or even German (you know, ö) would seek to learn how to pronounce it. It's not such a huge task to learn it that it significantly increases the difficulty of learning the language, but it is a sound that cannot easily be represented by the English characters.

Honestly, English is a solid choice for a lingua Franca. It's not inflected at all, relies heavily on prepositions, and so much media is already in English that it's not difficult to practice. Pronunciation may be tough, but that's true for most other languages. English verbs are also usually easy AF.

I think that's why it's stupid to say it's "OE." I probably don't pronounce it the right way, but I was friends with a Danish kid as a child, and he told me you just say it like this, and I said, "like this?" and he said that's pretty close and he didn't get why everybody else goes "OOOWEEEEOOOWEEOWEEE."
But at least in that case it's a whole new letter, and not a normal letter with a bunch of diacriticals in orbit and they don't tell you what the diacriticals mean but rather try to make you wrote memorize everything.

Well, I've lived a year in Ontario and a few months in MA, and my experience is that about 5% of people who took French can speak pretty good French, while the rest is absolute fucking garbage-tier.
I was appaled by how poor the Canadian's French was, in general. They have a whole province that speaks French. I mean, I get it, they usually hate Quebecers. But a lot of people who took secondary French immersion - and I met a ton of them - were fucking terrible too. If you're being given an opportunity, at least try to capitalize on it. This just reeked of laziness. Whether it's german, french, spanish, italian, cuckish or even some asian shit, a secondary language will always be useful.
