Yep, I've made it my life's mission to shill for this concept and probably will until the day I die (or until it finally happens). This country is too big and diverse to remain as one nation if it wants to continue in any kind of organized or peaceful way. Too much polarization.
I don't think the borders should follow state lines exactly like how the map shows, but that's really beside the point. It's still roughly what I think it should be split up like.
It would improve so many things, from increasing nationalism to decreasing crime. I think the new countries should work together in some way though while still remaining independent.
The only real downside to this one might bring up is that it would drastically impact our collective military and economical strength and influence in the world. We're stronger on a worldwide scale if we remain as one big entity rather than a bunch of smaller ones. But as there's no reason we all wouldn't still be allies, I don't think this is a huge deal. The pros outweigh the cons in this situation either way in my opinion.

Though I think many of the current states are too weak to set themselves up relatively independently in this day and age. 50 states seems to be too many and the state borders should be related to geographic and cultural differences, not just random straight lines. Even if the country were split into two different countries (north/south or east/west for example) it would run better than it does now, but 4-8 subdivisions seems to be the sweet spot as far as keeping each one economically stable but still culturally and politically compatible.
If the best we can do is just to strengthen current state's rights and weaken the federal government's power then I'm behind that too, but I wish we could do more.

I would expect several of them to band together to make more "logical" formations, though. The scattered minorities like the Blacks in Dixie and the Indians in the West in particular, though some degree of Bantustan/avtonomny-okrug self-rule would be nice within larger polities.
