well i mean this was valid in the 18th century but it's 2016 now. more than half the science and engineering fields are women and women still get paid far less than men for doing the same work. even in sport females are paid far less than their male counterparts for playing the exact same sport.
But they do get paid the same amount for the same work. The wage gap is the average earnings of all men and all women. It does not take into account whether or not they negotiate their salaries and if they become pregnant and need to take maternity leave.

The pay gap can be explained entirely by 2 factors:
1. comparing 'similar' work instead of identical work [i.e. a janitor and a dish washer, because one is more likely to be male and the other female] ignoring supply and demand.
2. In jobs where you can negotiate your own salary, men are more assertive.
The solution to the former is for women to become janitors, binmen, etc, and the solution to the latter is for women to get better at negotiation or regulations to be placed on salary negotiation.
