I don't see anything wrong with that, especially since its main target audience are japanese people. That's the culture they are brought up in, so it's a given that this is what their entertainment should incorporate.
There is however an agenda pushed in the 2011 anime adaptation that wasn't nearly as prevalent in the manga, and that's the homosexual tension between the characters. Any humans put together will automatically attempt to communicate with each other in one way or another, this is how language developed. Other species also have 'language' of sorts but not nearly as highly developed.
Math (applied mathematics) would not be considered escapism as it is used to accomplish things in the real world. Even theoretical mathematics can be used to theorize about physics and other ways in which the world work. Plus you should also look up the philosophical idea of mathematical realism

Trust me on this. When I watched anime I would legitimately get depressed whenever I wasn't watching this it. It really is like a drug. I started watching it when I was in school. It makes you feel happy and its all light hearted fun stuff. 99% of anime has no message or deepness at all. I would spend entire weekends shut inside so I could binge watch shows. When you stop watching it you realize the real world isn't as fun. Thats when you start looking for another fix. At a Certain point you begin to hate yourself for watching this literal garbage but you can't stop yourself from doing it anyway.
Reading a fiction book is not really escapism. Fiction books do not attempt to make the protag a filler for the reader. There are still stories and plots in books. In anime there are none. Anime is so good at making feel apart of the world. It makes it just makes you feel happy until you look at the boring dull real world.
