I think that, realistically, if the US were to ever Balkanize, it would never fully break up. Instead it would probably evolve into a loose confederacy. Take a peek at Switzerland's operation. New England has a culture of its own. They would stick together. Aside from ports and Syrup, though, they bring very little to the game. Individually, the people are wealthy, but there's not a lot up there. They would probably ally with the other colonies down to about Northern Virginia/DC area and since they brought in Pennsylvania, they'd probably bring in some of Ohio too.
By meddling in Virginia's affairs they would instantly be at odds with the Confederacy but there would likely be so much disorder all around that it would probably never come to a shooting war, maybe an occasional border skirmish.

The important distinction now is between the urban cores and the rural areas. Look at an reporting district map that breaks it down by county. Very, very few states are solidly one color despite how hard core blue or red the media makes them out to be.
So if, IF, we get balkanization in the US it won't be as pretty as muh confedrates muh pacifica and all that other lazy shit that you're peddling.
However, if it did break down on a geographical / regional basis, there is no way in FUCK the west coast would look like that. The major divide for Oregon and Washington is the Cascade Mountains. West of the Cascades you get tech jobs and liberals. East of the Cascades you get farming and conservatives. The eastern halves of those states already bitch about wanting to be separate and not having a voice in government, so no way would they give up even more political power.
Similarly, I doubt California would stay cohesive. The north has wanted to do its own thing for a while. Silicone Valley might be able to pull together enough fiscal clout to carry the bay area. Nobody, though, will want anything that SoCal has to offer.

That's not how thinks would work out.
We always use the term balkanization. But why did they split the way they did? It wasn't because certain areas of yugoslavia were centered around agriculture while others were centered around industry or anything like that. It was about ethnicity.
The lines drawn between groups in america are not regional. You can't just say "oh the mid atlantic states are similar enough so they'll go together". Fucking wrong. Compare fucking inner-city philadelphia to its suburbs, or NYC to upstate. The dividing lines are not by region but by race.
