Blago Zadro, a commander of the northern part of Croatian defense forces in Vukovar during the Croatian War of Independence.
The Battle of Vukovar was an 87-day siege of the town by JNA (Yugoslav National Army). He led around 1,800 lightly armed soldiers against 36,000 JNA soldiers and Serb paramilitaries equipped with heavy armor and artillery. During the battle, shells and rockets were fired into the town at a rate of up to 12,000 a day. After almost 3 months of battle, a tank graveyard had formed on the Trpinjska road, the main approach from the east, consisting of ~110 tanks and armored vehicles, all destroyed with mines, RPG's and a single AT gun. 3 fighter aircraft were also shot down. The town eventually fell, but it stalled the Serbian army and bought enough time for a proper defense force to be organised. Without him, it's questionable if this country would have it's independence.
