The Republican party never cared about Conservatism except during election times when it was useful to get them into power. Whenever put in power, they expanded the size of government, spent the country further into debt, and restricted peoples freedoms. The moment they didn't need it anymore they abandoned it, and now think of it as something to be done away with (ie the tea party). The Republican party didn't want Ted Cruz to be president, they wanted another Bush.
