Britain did help a little during the Seven Years War. After the colonies were tapped out Britain sent their own troops to fight which reinvigorated the war effort. They ended the war with Amherst's victory at Louisberg.
However the British had been getting themselves into wars with the French for the last 100 years or so. They had become too accustomed to war.
Despite the British Empire owning pretty much the entire known world at this point, parliament was paranoid the next war was right around the corner and they would be incapable of defending themselves because they were down £125,000,000 after the Seven Years War.
So Britain started taxing the colonies like crazy, which ironically led to the next war they were so worried about.
Colonies didn't want to pay the taxes because they already taxed themselves with their blood and money when the war began, and its the Crown's responsibility to provide defense.
Parliament wanted the colonies to pay the taxes because that debt was accrued protecting the colonies and the Royal Crown still technically owned the colonies anyway.
Both have point. Arguing ensues etc etc and here we are.
