Yep, it should start now. Bernie has no chance of winning (he'd have to get like 70% in every election from here to the convention).
But by making it closer, Trump will make the libs more upset that the "good" candidate was ruined by Hillary/establishment. At worst, this means those people won't vote. At best, they'll vote for another non-establishment (Trump) to get back at her.

At this point the only way Bernie can win is if he gets 70% of the votes in every upcoming state...and the polls show he can't even break 50% in most of them. Short of hacking the voting machines he has no chance of winning.
