4 years ago and 8 years ago proved this was a dire misjudgement. It isn't possible.
I have to say, these last two months I was having doubts. Trump has been relatively quiet in these primaries since the whole Chicago debacle both in primary performance and in rhetoric (aside from the whole Michelle Fields thing).
Besides letting people cool down about him, I've noticed three things within the week that have reignited my optimism.
1) The Tuesday primary wins. He won bigger than almost anyone predicted. If he performs even remotely well in the rest of the primaries, he will win the nom outright. Then it's full steam ahead on Hillary
2) The #NeverTrump crowd has basically been defeated. They are still around, but I think the petition is at 28,000 or so? That's fewer supporters than subscribers to Ramzpaul. I seriously doubt at this point that they can do too much more damage to Trump. And even if only 1/5 of the NeverTrump folks signed the petition, that's still a max of 150,000 republicans that won't vote Trump. That's a lot, but 95 percent of them just won't vote for either candidate. Trump will more than make up for the losses with new working class voters. Looks as if the weakness among Republicans was way overstated.
3) that foreign policy speech. He didn't have to give it. But he did. It was probably the best thing he has done in this campaign. He's got cred as an American badass; he needed to dial it back and look measured and presidential, which he completely nailed.
If he can unite Republicans and use the full force of the GOP, he will smash Hillary.
