...what? look at the damn aerial photographs. nothing was left. somme was bloody due to poor communications (advance too far get cut off and slaughtered) and both sides deciding that artillery strikes should counter enemy movement.

More then half of all the shells that was fired on the first day, where Duds, they used shrapnel shells to blow the barbed wire, not HE.
It didn't even damage the wire.

and yet the entire battlefield was reduced to crater upon crater upon mud upon further crater. now when I say wire, I'm thinking of the intended setups, like the sappers would unroll methodically. I can understand the wire being tossed about and still somewhat of a hazard, but most of it had to be damaged or simply buried by the bombardment, thus less effective. I fail to see how it could still be such a hazard when the entire landscape has been churned like butter.
