The Milky Way galaxy has over 100,000,000,000 star systems. Trillions of planets and moons. An unlimited supply of virtually every resource known to man. If we use Drake's Equation, we can equate that our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 10 advanced civilizations at any given time.

How do we compare to them? What do they look like? Do they have similar problems that we do? Do they believe in God or many Gods? Do they treat life as ignorant and selfishly as we do? What is their meaning of life?

The purpose of the universe is to create complexity from simple fundamental building blocks. Whether you're talking about matter, life, or intelligence, over time, it all trends from simplicity to complexity.
Consider that the universe began as a soup of fundamental particles, and the elements as we know them today didn't exist. Over time, this soup accumulated into stars, where they were transformed into heavier elements by fusion. This process occurred over and over again until we had all the elements in the periodic table - all the ingredients necessary for life.
