Saying "I'll vote for whoever gives me what I want on this issue" is stronger than "I'll vaguely support this person because others in my peer group do" which is how I think modern American politics work.
I don't think people even think about the issues, they're just memes to them, they just go with whatever crowd they are trying to fit in with. It's why transgender shit has become such an issue, because it's a complete non-issue, a mountain out of a mole hole, but everyone needs to take the "side" their peer group does because politics are like a sports game to them.
