More and more I'm getting the feeling that we do not fundamentally disagree, and this is just an argument over semantics, in which our disagreement arises from our differing experiences of how "egalitarianism" has been applied as a principle.
I think a good example this would be English grammar schools and the eleven plus exam. To me, the egalitarian approach would be to allow each student the opportunity to take the test, and then reward the ones who do well by allowing them to go to a grammar school and receive a higher level of education. However, to a more 'progressive' minded individual, the egalitarian approach would be to abolish the system entirely, and send all students to schools with the same academic standards.
In this example it could be said the same principle is being applied, but to a different extent. Because of this, I took the stance earlier that meritocracy should take priority over egalitarianism. However I do not think that a country can be truly meritocratic if it does not allow people the chance to prove their worth.
Also, I do understand where you are coming from when you link egalitarianism to equality of outcome. As, success leads to greater opportunities, to ensure truly equal opportunity, you must ensure equal outcome. However, I do not believe academic merit is one of the 'arbitrary factors' that I the principle of egalitarianism seeks to overcome.
