As a people wherever the Catholic church was strong, it was rather difficult to be in the larger society as a Jew. For instance, Jews were kicked out of Charles VI's lands in 1394. The reason was officially complaints against Jews by noblemen for usury and undermining French efforts in the 100 years war.
