I'm all for guns and everything but my family has never owned one and I've just never felt the need. We live in a safe white community with 0 crime whatsoever so it's just never felt like something I need to own. Would I like one? Sure I guess, I'd rarely ever use it though, so why bother?

You say that the freedom to own a gun is all good and that you consider it a lack of freedom in countries where this is not the case.
On the other hand, i.e driving 100 mph in a crowded area is not allowed. And it's very reasonable and most people will consider it a good thing that this is not legal.
How is the freedom of owning guns a inherent freedom that should be had compared to traffic rules that takes away your freedom to drive like a lunatic? ( I hope you get what I'm trying to ask in the question here)

I grew up in the Bay Area and have fired a gun once at a range in Oregon on vacation.
I have no idea how to get into it. It seems like all the ranges up by my (Humboldt county) require a referral to join, and I have few friends. I don't trust myself with a gun I don't know how to use anymore than I'd trust myself to try and drive a semi or operate the delimber at the lumber mill across the street.
I've seen lots of infographics about which GUN to get, but I can't even get to that point because I don't know how to learn to USE one.
For the record, Humboldt gives conceal carry to anyone and there's very few local restrictions on gun ownership compared to the cities in California, so there's no law stopping me. I just don't want to be an idiot about it.
I would dearly love a run through of where to start.

I took the CCW course in Kentucky because I didn't have anyone to teach me about guns. The instructors were super helpful. They explained operation & cleaning, and also helped briefly when we got to the life-size portion.
Also, generally, gun shop employees will be helpful if you walk in and just tell them you don't really know what you're doing.

I'm in a shooting club but ammo is too expensive right now. I need to be member for a year and shoot at least once a month or 18 times a year before I can apply for a gun permit.
