A lot of Protestant Evangelist Americans really do believe in Bible verses like this, they believe that it is God's will to work hard, and people who don't work are sinful. They believe in the line "idle hands are the Devil's plaything." And people who don't work are going to spend their time doing evil things like drugs, booze, premarital sex, and vandalism.

All forms of socialism boil down to state or community ownership of the means of production. In practice, this translates to no private property rights. If you want to take my property, I'm not going to be happy with you, and you're going to have to be a violent, oppressive dictator to get it.
On top of that, some sniveling bureaucrat generally has no clue what it actually costs to produce something, nor what price the market can bear. The central planning that goes along with socialism tends to fuck prices up to the point where low prices lead to shortages.
