As someone who knows very little about Mormonism: why is it hated so much and why is it often called a cult? they seem like one of the few groups in the US that still have traditional values, they seem pretty red pill at first sight so I wonder why they are hated so much. It's pretty telling that evangelical republicans didn't come out to vote for Romney because he's a Mormon, I wonder how much closer the election would've been if he wasn't a Mormon.

I work with a few Mormons. They're quiet, resourceful, friendly people. That's been my experience with Mormons. Generally nice, good people. At the same time, I've had no experience with the church.

They take kids straight out of highschool and send them away from their friends or families, cut them off from technology, education, literature, swimming, anything not church approved for 2 years while they send them on "missions" which are hailed as the #1 goal of members.

I don't know, the religion is obviously made up, but I feel bad for the followers because every Mormon I've ever met- a lot (born and raised in Utah to a Mormon family but non-religious parents) has been a nice person who truly seems to love their family and want to do the right, kind thing. That's what everyone says but I have spent countless hours in the homes of Mormon families and never felt any sort of bad attitude. They all seemed genuinely kind. My husband always says I'm naive about people's subtle attitudes, but I've had way too much good experience to believe that most Mormons aren't good people.

not exactly true. my friends are mormon and big ones at that. they do not alienate people. they do not cut them off from technology. my friend is currently on a mission in brazil. now i don't believe in any religion and think it's stupid, but mormons aren't all bad. my buddy on a mission wouldn't tell me any of their "secrets" but it's not hard to search it on the internet. once i found out he confirmed they were true. anyway i get an email from him once a month. he doesn't mind it and is coming back early this summer. he actually seems pretty happy and has lost a lot of weight.
