Pretty good, more or less created a new style of writing and ran with it to become one of the greatest American authors, was arguably at one point the most successful living author. Very very interesting fellow, good at writing, ie his writing has somewhat literary merit. Pretty much killed himself for a laugh
>>
Completely misunderstood and misrepresented.

"Pro-Drugs": He actually HATED Timothy Leary. HST said drugs were fun but didn't enlighten anyone.

"Anti-government": He thought the establishment had become corrupt but repeatedly stated he didn't think laws, law enforcers, etc... where inherently bad or corrupt and stated several times it was the law that kept him alive on several occasions [and out of jail].

"Mentally Ill": This is because he was erratic on drugs and commit suicide. He wasn't mentally ill, he was high. His suicide was a choice, not some random event due to depression.

"Wild": Almost none of his articles were really wild.
>>
>>72302601

I posted this before as an unsuccessful thread, but there are some notable similarities between Thompsons's run for sheriff and Trump's campaign, judging by a documentary about the Freak Power movement.

Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrBR1YxfJf8

>outsider, non-politician taking on the establishment
>'radical' political positions
>"a moralist disguised as an immoralist"
>"a campaign as much about a style of life as about political issues"
>hugely popular, brings out a lot of new interested voters
>Russian Archie Bunker (11:52) is against Thompson but would be a Trump supporter: "I would get businessman that mean business. That stand up and have backbone and will stand up for American citizens."
>Thompson supporter: "Now that we're finally registering to vote and bringing our own candidates, it's a horror. They (the establishment) want to stop it because we're liable to take it over."
>Thompson (15:04): "If I went out there and walked through the streets naked with a bomb in each hand and covered in drugs, people would still vote for me."
>people saying that if Thompson is elected sheriff they'll move out of the area
>some guy about 20 minutes in: "Hunter Thompson has no grip on reality. I think he's psychotic."
>huge turnout: mostly new, young voters

The documentary doesn't cover it, but eventually the establishment started to panic and, alledgedly, the incumbent sheriff only won because he had people rolled out from retirement homes to vote for him.

Ideas on what this might imply for this general election? What would HST have thought of Trump? Would he still have sided with the Democrats when war criminal Hillary announced her run?

I don't think he would either, but he seemed to have a similar style of campaigning. I wonder if he would have seen that himself and if that would have softened his opinion on him.

Redpilled on politics and how to live; loved guns, fine women, and fine drink

Also quite possibly the greatest comedic writer of all time
His shit had me in stitches especially The Rum Diary and many of his short stories

He was also pretty badass he joined the Hell's Angels for a while but left after they beat him to within an inch of his life
>>
>>72307533
How? Practically nobody does the gonzo thing anymore. If anything, he gave journalism at least two books to hold in high regard, Hell's Angels and Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72.
>>
>>72307685
Because everyone now does this "The author is more important than the theme of the investigation" shit no?
>>
>>72307760
That's because some journalists try to copy his style but aren't smart enough so they fail miserably

Hunter Thompson was the greatest political satirist of the 20th century
>>
>>72307760
No, no one does it.
Really.
And it wouldn't be his fault his books are great, it would be journalism ruining itself (no need to specify western, there is almost no non-western good journalism)

People are quick to forget that good journalism has never existed and that good journalists like Thompson can be counted on your fingers
>>
>>72308125
>good journalism has never existed
I wouldn't go so far, but it's definitely rare.

One thing I like about Thompson's journalism is that he never even pretended to be an objective reporter. More journalists should own up to the reality that objective journalism doesn't exist. The amount of biased reporting that is accepted as factual is infuriating.
>>
>>72308125
No people are quick to forget it existed and still exists. Because they don't bother reading anything let alone newspapers.
Of course it has never been the majority but there are always competent peoples working as journalists and making a great job at it.
Also yeah, good journalists are rare, but there are more than an handful, most of them really far away from having anything to do with gonzo.
>>
>>72308453
Thompson was able to not have to pretend to be objective cause his shit was so good but your average journalist doesn't have the balls that Thompson did to say "fuck you" to the editors so they end up caring about pleasing the editors and publicists more than producing good pieces
>>
>>72308567
I can't think of any living journalists that have the wit and intelligence that Thompson had

And yeah of course gonzo isn't really a thing anymore cause it was unique to Thompson, no one else could pull it off and anyone attempting an unconventional style these days wont be able to reach circulation beyond some niche internet newspaper
>>
>>72307989

He's snorting coke and smoking weed on camera in a British doc. I'm pretty sure he drank a little too.

I recommend reading pic related if you want to have a better insight in what his life was like from a source other than himself. The book shows that he was a pretty shitty father despite his best intentions, tells about his drug abuse and terrible chronic alcoholism that fucked him up in his later years (leading to things like incontinence, loss of the ability to concentrate, hip and spine deterioration etc.), and relationships with other people. His son says HST couldn't say that he loved him so he would give him a small gift (as in a toy, or money) sometimes, sounded slightly autistic to be honest.

>openly racist
>thoroughly disillusioned
>took part in hippy culture but grew to hate it

>kept doing drugs long after the "Love Generation" abandoned their retarded lifestyle

>made a living doing it and had more meaningful life experiences than they ever would

Hunter S. Thompson was one of the only people to come out of the 1960s more intelligent than when he went in.

>We are all wired into a survival trip now. No more of the speed that fueled that 60's. That was the fatal flaw in Tim Leary's trip. He crashed around America selling 'consciousness expansion' without ever giving a thought to the grim meat-hook realities that were lying in wait for all the people who took him seriously. All those pathetically eager acid freaks who thought they could buy Peace and Understanding for three bucks a hit. But their loss and failure is ours too.

>What Leary took down with him was the central illusion of a whole life-style that he helped create: A generation of permanent cripples, failed seekers, who never understood the essential old mystic fallacy of the Acid Culture: the desperate assumption that somebody, or at least some force, is tending the light at the end of the tunnel.

Interesting ideas. I also get the feeling that Donald Trump, like Hunter, was never really serious about actually being elected, and never seriously expected to get this far. I don't think anyone on /pol/ was ever really serious about Trump until about 6 months ago. I think alot of supporters, particularly the /pol/ types support Trump mostly for how much it triggers the leftists and that he represents the first time in their lifetime that there has actually been any actual opposition against this cultural madness. Trump has awakened something in America and the world that he is not worthy to receive. I think most people here must realise though that Hilary was chosen as president years ago and that there is no democracy.

who?

people often talk about him being only a druggie and yes thats how hipsters, potheads etc uphold his memory.

But I think he endorsed booze and different alcoholic drinks much more, I read "great shark hunt" few years ago and it got my mouth watering and mind longing for booze after every article. Goddamn, truly dangerous literacy.

He shot himself when Dubya got re-elected.

Dubya's family had him silenced when he starting blabbing about their dirty secrets. The snuff films, the coke parties, their real business in the drug trade. There was reason Hunter never went to jail despite his brazen behavior.

There was a lot of chatter of HST involvement in the pedowood threads.

What we do know for certain that Hunter S. Thomas was saved Jimmy Buffett. The Cheeseburgers in Paradise guy? Buffett has a membership in Bohemian Grove. Look it up.

We all know what goes on in Bohemian Grove. Kid rape. Human sacrifice. Drugs. Orgies. All in the name of Moloch.

Oh look: Former speaker of the house Dennis Hastert just got busted for being a giant fucking gay pedo.

Rereading the Great Shark Hunt now and it's kind of making me want to ho berserk and jumpstart my life. NEET life didn't really work out but neither has wage slavery. What the fuck is the third path for someone broke and angry who hates the world? Maybe I should put maximum effort into music somehow. Sucks being old and having no network though.
>>
My favorite degenerate... If he were alive today he would be screaming,"1488. Gas the kikes. Race war forever!!!"
>>
Some of his stuff is funny but nowadays he's a meme human
>>
>>72319416

The third path is say fuck it and live from day to day.

Just do whatever you want, but do it to your best efforts realizing that not a single day will be comfortable, and yet most of your days will be stories many will never experience.

There are people who say fuck it, from photogs leaving civilization to live alone on a deserted island
To writers living in the Himalayas
To folks who just wander the world in a hobo kind of way

Protip. No one starts with networking. You need to get around places to get to know people.

I got into Hunter S Thompson when I was 13 watching the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I read the book shortly thereafter. In my young adult years I read On the Campaign Trail '72, which opened my eyes to the degeneracy of politicians. Nowadays, I enjoy his short stories. I heartily disagree with his politics, but he writes some damn funny political satire. One story I recommend is particularly funny called "The Judge". It's a satire on Clarence Thomas.

Pretty sure he would despise anyone who would decide to become a drug addict based on reading one of his books.
>>
>>72299003
Yeah, it's not like he made an entire new genre of journalism or anything...
>>
Most of the drugs were a lie. He liked weed daily and a bit of coke on the weekends, plus he drank heavily but so does/did every other writer worth a shit. This is because pointing out our own stupid shit to us is a very tough job.

He was the last American, desu senpai. Feels sad.

are you me

People that think Fear and Loathing was glorifying drugs completely missed the point. The movie and book repeatedly states that the hippie culture failed and you could not buy peace and prosperity through LSD. He thought drugs were fun but not the answer. Hells Angles was about how he thought they were the answer to the hippie culture. Badasses that lived the hippy lifestyle and would assist in the movement. But then he lost faith when they beat protesters.

Have you read Hell's Angels? I think he lost faith when they beat HIM.

Yes, spiderbro. Looking like it's time to wage some type of total war against the schwein and turn the amplifiers up to 11. Fuck the neighbors. They were always fags and greedheads anyway.

He's the reason I got into and stay in journalism.
Rum Diary heavily underrated as movie and book.
His articles kill his novels but he was largely right place, right time with editors who supported his shit.
Also, rode the wave in the rivers of gold (classified money in print media).

What he did is no longer possible in the newsprint world. Shame really.

have you read fear and loathing on the campaign trail? or seen interview with politicians who he traveled with?
He was on speed 24/7 that time.

Peter Boyle as his friend.
>>
>>72320718
His son says he drank about a fifth of liquor and used about a gram of coke (iirc) minimum daily, weed a few times a week. There's no doubt the drug use was exaggerated but he was heavily into it by all accounts.
