The book shows that he was a pretty shitty father despite his best intentions, tells about his drug abuse and terrible chronic alcoholism that fucked him up in his later years (leading to things like incontinence, loss of the ability to concentrate, hip and spine deterioration etc.), and relationships with other people. His son says HST couldn't say that he loved him so he would give him a small gift (as in a toy, or money) sometimes, sounded slightly autistic to be honest.

In my young adult years I read On the Campaign Trail '72, which opened my eyes to the degeneracy of politicians. Nowadays, I enjoy his short stories.
