This might sound fucking retarded, but how do all the people on this board speak English, perfectly too. Literally people from every country are speaking English I really dont get it. Are your parents native speakers and brought you up with both languages? Were you taught it growing up? Hell, even google translate? how do you guys do it?

I'm guessing some of it has to do with having English courses in school, but that wouldn't be enough.

Most of it probably has to do with the fact that the US/UK churn out English-language media like a motherfucker and blast it all over the world. Music, movies, TV, you name it. And yeah, you also have a huge chunk of the Internet written in English. I guess you could think of it as a form of language immersion.
>>
>>72296959

Even in Montreal, where you probably went, there are people who don't speak any English. You just don't notice them as a tourist because you pay more attention to the people you can communicate with.

Everything wortwhile was english since I was born, even my NES games in 1995, I was lazy student so they offered me Deutsch claiming it was easier, I told them I don't care since in my entire 10 years of life I've never seen German but encountered English every, single, day

My parents were dumb as hell to this day they live here in the Netherlands and they only speak Polish (we've moved from poland like 10 years ago) While I speak Polish, Dutch and English fluently.
I learned it mostly from the games i guess, and when i was young i had a phase where i was watching TV series and anime all the time and i was so bored waiting for Polish/Dutch translation i just learned English for it.
Also knowing English is just a basic trait because no matter where you go in the world if you know English you will most likely be able to communicate with someone.
But after that i just came to like learning new languages so i also speak jap and russian(jap because chineese cartoons and russian because i had few russian friends that were often talking in russian a lot and i was kinda annoyed by it so i learned entire language, both speaking only tho no writing) but not good enough to call it "fluently" more like communicatively

I learned it at school from year 5 onwards. And since it's just a dumbed down version of my native language it's not hard to learn.

It's easy to learn at a basic level, but it's hard to become expert in because it's so idiomatic and irregular. This, because it's been run over by so many other languages over the centuries.

You know why us non-native english speakers are so good at English? Because we're being taught actual English. If you live in England or US you'll start using slang or shortened versions of the language, which we won't learn since we're being taught what's written in a book.
I have seen the same thing happen in my country, where people will be "better" at the language than natives, but they don't understand our customized lingo, so to say

Yes there are many ways to express detailed information in Japanese but in normal usage of the language it is very vague.
A language is not only vocabulary and syntax, but also the way it is used. The Japanese language allows and encourages the omission of information in a way that makes it functionally quite vague when compared to English.

no, the word "Schwanz" means tail, but is also a "slang" or inpolite word for penis. so the rabbit has its small schwanz (meaning tail) on the back, the nazi has his small schwanz (this time meaning penis) on the front.

and yes, all of this while 14 year old boys literally get fucked in the ass in a swimming pool. but good luck waiting for this cucked-up state-sponsored "comedy" program adressing those issues.

I learnt it myself. I want to listen, speak, discuss with other people. If I limit the people who I talk to, then I will limit my progress as a person. It didn't take much effort to learn English, I'm not perfect at it, but I feel this enough lets me communicate clearly.

so to answer your question: no, no such thing exists.
the closest thing we had was Dr. Alfons Proebstl. He had a show on youtube which was really well made and is absolutely anti-PC and anti-cuck culture, but relies heavily on play-on-words, so I don't know how good it is for non-native speakers

yeah well, Latin is kind of the foundation for alot of European history/culture. alot of books were written only in Latin for a long time in European history. it was the language of scholars and the church. so I guess that's why we still have it in one of our school models.

also some professions actually demanded that you know Latin (medical doctor, lawyer), but I don't think they do anymore.

It's hilarious because in America nearly everyone is adverse to learning a new language, or nowhere near serious about it.
Asides from Britain's former empire, most of the world's infatuation with English comes from American mass media and culture since the 60s. American musicians, movies, and literature to a lesser extent have spread English to the point of being a lingua franca.

In my small high school, we only had Spanish as a foreign language choice, and it was the easiest shit class ever. However probably half of the class did horrible because no one felt like they needed to learn another language. Now I am taking Spanish as an easy second major.

>tl;dr American media spread English, and so Americans do not get exposed to other languages
>>
>>72296372
I learned it using a dictionary and watching/reading media from ~9 years old and onward.

My accent turns out to be rather peculiar because I don't have many opportunities to practice it but I guess it would go away if I had to speak it regularly for a couple of months.

I've been living most of my life in the U.S. but it still blows my mind how good native english speakers are. Probably my proficiency is on par with the average american but when I do group work in college with white kids it's just crazy. They are in a completely different level. Sometimes I think I'm dyslexic or something.

Worst part is I struggle reading and can barely write my native language: spanish. I try so hard with english but I feel there is a barrier or something where I will always make mistakes and have to proofread multiple times. It sucks.

Took me like 5 minutes to write this.

What do you think people are taught in schools here and the USA? Ebonics?

I think the reasons places like Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, and the rest of Scandinavia have such good English in particular (especially spoken English) is because their native languages fit quite nicely with English in ways some of the Latin languages don't.

Plus what the fuck else are you going to do in Denmark? Keep re-watching your Lars von Trier boxset?

Mainly self-taught in English from watching Cartoon Network as a kid. That's how I learned Spanish too, except from watching telenovelas.

Serbian and Croatian were kinda implied while growing up, thank you druze Tito.

I studied German in school, that was a personal interest, and took a year in Japanese.

But yeah, mainly learned English from watching cartoons that had no translations. School just taught me grammar.

Can fucking confirm.

I've learned more English from Cartoon Network and World of Warcraft than from going to english classes in school.

Back then, the cartoons were not dubbed over (like we have them today - they sound stupid in romanian and they fucking change the context of what they are saying most of the time).

We had only 2 channels with Cartoons (Cartoon Network and Jetix) and damn, most of the episodes aired were fun as hell to watch and they were very very educative.

Also, English is the most studied language in Romania. We have English classes starting from kindergarden and during high-school and college it's mandatory (so you have like 12 years to study English).

Besides English, we usually have another foreign language, like French, German, Spanish and whatnot. Hell, back in the 9th grade, I had Spanish, Chinese, English, Latin, French, all of them being mandatory classes.

>cartoon network
>jetix
>world of warcraft
>other games
>PC in English
>English in school for 12 years

I learned english from games and movies. I was able to speak and write english long before i ever had to learn it. When i was 11 years old i played cs and got a mic. In my further life i have never had to learn english and can speak it without you hearing my native accent.

English is pretty easy because everything is in english.

Piece of advice for our anglo friends: learn another fucking language, even two. Then you can start complaining that a foreigner stole your job, a foreigner that probably has a masters degree and can speak 3-4 languages, easily.

Hell, I speak 3 languages besides my native one (English, French, Russian) and I'm still considered a weakling back here. Most of our students can easily speak 2-3-4 languages when they reach University.

Most of them are using VPNs. People say "proxies" but that stopped being common a while back. Just using a VPN, editing cookies, and encrypting your DNS is usually enough to change your flag and apparent identity here, without the system tracking all your posts. Most of the threads are probably shills samefagging using VPNs. If you pay close attention to grammar, vocabulary, and style, you'll notice that there are at least 5 people posting under seemingly different flags. They're also careless sometimes and use images with the same weird filenames, they get triggered and sperg out over the same topics, then use the same URLs and arguments over and over and over. Can't be sure if these are pad shills, or just spergs who do it for free. Lot's of mentally ill anons and NEETs think they're online activists or haktivists, and target places like /pol/ for political activism. Telecomix has been caught doing this quite a bit in the past, there's also evidence to suggest that they're paid shills despite pretending to do it for free.

So when you see those same flags, it's likely because the rest of the stable VPNs have had their IP ranges banned by the system, and those odd ones just haven't been caught by the admins yet. Especially if the person speaks highly idiomatic, colloquial American English. Even people with very good English skills, but are native speakers of other languages, tend to have their own colloquial dialects from speaking English primarily with non-native speakers. If someone sounds American but has a different flag, 90% chance they're in America on a VPN trying to ban evade.

Serious response here

Life is the same for upper-middle class millennials everywhere provided they have an interest in TV and internet culture. Because the media the world is exposed to is very western, millennials in countries from Mexico to Egypt to India to Singapore have had similar experiences growing up like watching DragonBall Z, playing Pokemon and trading legendaries with their friends, arguing who the strongest Power Ranger is, building Lego, maybe watching Friends or Seinfeld and in general picking up on English and western values really fast.

When this category of people immigrate to western countries they usually have 0 problems fitting in and are very respectful and fun to be around.

can confirm. Apart from a few TV shows and cartoons that were never aired in Romania, we basically had the exact same thing as the West had while growing up.

Same TV shows, same games, same cartoons, same movies. The only difference was that ours usually aired one or two years after they were released in the West, due to huge fees the TV stations and whatnot had to pay for the distribution.
