Actually that requirement isn't for the VP, it's only for the president.
If a non-American is elected as VP, then the VP is simply removed from the line of succession to the presidency. If the president dies, then the speaker of the house would become president (if eligible).
But as a matter of practical politics, it would be stupid to elect a VP that doesn't qualify to be president.
