>Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro decided Tuesday night to shorten the work week to two days -- Monday and Tuesday -- in an effort to save energy and electricity. The country's most important source of electricity, El Guri dam, has record-low water levels.
>Maduro had previously announced earlier in April that all Fridays through May would be holidays for public sector employees. Now Wednesdays and Thursdays will also be holidays for public sector workers at least until the end of May.

>According to Venezuela's statistics, there are roughly 2.6 million public sector employees, which represents about 20% of the country's workforce. It's still officially unclear if Venezuelans will be paid for all five days of work or just two days.

>Venezuela's economy shrank 5.7% last year and it's projected to contract another 8% this year. Inflation in Venezuela is estimated to rise nearly 500%, according to the IMF's latest projections. Its currency, the bolivar, is worth less than a U.S. penny on the black market, where most Venezuelans exchange dollars for pesos.

>Maduro is taking drastic measures to save electricity. This week his government began a schedule of rolling blackouts in much of the country. Caracas, the capital, is excluded from the blackouts because the federal government is there, and some tourist destinations will be able to keep the lights on. Hospitals won't be affected, according the government

Argentina and Venezuela had similar crises.

Venezuela picked a left wing government to solve it. It failed and everything is shit and collapsing.
Argentina picked a right wing government to solve it. It failed and everything is shit and collapsing.

Conclusion: the prices of commodities are more relevant than any ideology

Venezuela's economy has been falling apart for a while now. Half of the Government (The Presidency and the Supreme Court) is made up of criminals who regularly traffic drugs using the National Guard and military. The National Assembly can't get shit done because the other two branches of government suppress everything they do. Crime rates are obscene and have only been getting worse. Caracas has the highest murder per capita rate in the world and kidnappings are a common occurrence.

That's not even to speak of the downward spiral that Chavez' socioeconomic policies have caused. All the farmland has gone to waste for years. There's barely any industry to speak of. Most of Venezuela's economy has relied on oil exports in order to function. That was all fine and good when oil prices were at an all time high during the War on Terror and such. Now oil prices have dropped through the floor and Venezuela is feeling the pain. Massive inflation and food shortages coupled with aforementioned crime and corrupt government have created a powder keg.

Full blown civil war is imminent. As bad as that sounds, it'll be even worse than what you imagine. Their proximity to Colombia will make for an incredibly messy conflict. Colombia has been in a state of constant civil unrest bordering on civil war for decades. Communist guerillas and Anti-Communist militias who are both armed to the teeth come to blows constantly and it WILL spill over the border if the Venezuelan Government collapses.

there is a lot of optimism, but there is concern that reforms will take time to deliver results and the negative momentum of the economy from the previous govt. will be blamed on the new administration

argentina has a lot of resources and potential to be rich as fuck
>>

I think he'll do fine. We were in a technical default and went through 12 years of rampant corruption and deception. Our current president cannot fix this in a few months, but he's taking the right steps.

Of course he has to deal with the remnants of the former government who are trying to cause unrest because that's how peronists are.

Either way at this point what anyone can tell you about Argentina is merely speculation, that much is certain. Nobody knows what will happen at all.

>1 in 5 Venezuelans work public sector
>>
>>72242412

In their defense, South American "Democracies" are often anything but what they're called. So-called Presidents are more akin to Dictators. Chavez appeased the upper class for a long time by keeping oil prices in-country very low and capitalizing on the West's ravenous hunger for oil. The rapidly evaporating middle class have been paralyzed by crime for quite some time and that crime has kept them fearful of any changes to the status quo. Considering the Venezuelan Government's close ties with criminal elements they were gridlocked. Then there's the election rigging, the outright bought-and-paid-for Supreme Court, and so on.

The United Socialist Party of Venezuela rode the Venezuelan people as far as they could. Now they're being bucked. Instead of just falling off they're digging their spurs in harder. It's not going to end well.

True to some extent. Once commodities fell, all economies reliant on them were fucked. It would be very difficult for a government, left or right, to fix the issue. Literally the only way to survive at this point is using up savings (if not nonexistent), taking loans, austerity measures and privatizing public services and institutions until commodities raise again.

That said, during Chavez's administration, Venezuela went from having oil as 70% of its exports to having oil as 95% of its exports. So he was responsible for Venezuela getting hit so hard by oil prices now.

Moreover, neither Chavez nor Kirchner were big on saving money (like Right Wing governments usually are), and they could have diminished the effects of the current crisis had they saved money (and also invested in Power Plants in Chavez's case) instead of using up all their money on social programs.

Note that Evo Morales is also a so-called Socialist, but he did save money during the commodity boom, so now he has the one country in South America that still looks like it can economically grow.

>>72243571

For fucks sake, Scandinavia works so well because they're almost entirely white. Whites are more empathetic and more likely to put the need to help others for the greater good over the need to "get mine" and steal from the system.

This comes from thousands of years of evolution where whites in Europe had to be empathetic and work together in order to survive because their biggest threat was the cold. It was beneficial to be empathetic to someone out in the cold because he could help the group grow stronger and survive the winter.

In other parts of the world, those groups of humans evolved to be more corrupt, manipulative, and distrustful because their biggest threat were other tribes of humans. Empathy has no value there. Empathy gets you killed.

The colder the group of whites, the more likely they are to be extremely empathetic and more likely they are to be willing to work together in a socialist society working towards the greater good for everyone, not just themselves.

Sad thing is, during Kirchner's 12 year long leadership, society political stance became extremely polarized between Anti-Kircher (or just 'K') and Pro-K.

She used similar tactics as Maduro does, she points fingers at the USA or UK and blame them for our declining economy, calling them Imperialist colonizers, etc. Add some 'muh malvinas' sensacionalist speech. and she won over half of the silly population calling themselves the 'true nacionalist folk'

Now that she's off power, there's a lot of hidden and corrupt shit floating up.

>Inflation in Venezuela is estimated to rise nearly 500%, according to the IMF's latest projections. Its currency, the bolivar, is worth less than a U.S. penny on the black market, where most Venezuelans exchange dollars for pesos.

this would be awesome if it happened in a small rich country, but Venezuela is fucking beyond thunderdome now

Norway and also Scandinavia used to be the most capitalist and protestant countries in Europe. It wasn't until the 1950's we implemented social democracy. And we did it mainly to appease the communists.
>>
>tfw Venezuela is one of the world's biggest oil producers
This is what happens when you don't mass kill communists.
>>
>>72240512
Socialism, hell yeah!
>>
>>72248376
It is. It's falling apart as we speak. Scandinavian society is literally unsustainable, it has only coasted so far because of great wealth created decades ago when Sweden was ruthlessly capitalist.

If Brazil can get out of our mess soon, we will be able to keep the venezuelan civil war from growing too much, and we will be able to protect the South American Borders

But Panama isn't that better than us, you are just fairly better because you have all that tax heaven's money, and outside of the downtown of Panama, everything else is pretty shitty.
>>
>>72255657
Impeachment didn't happen yet. Our senate still needs to vote, and the current president of the senate is a Dilma supporter, and he is doing everything in his power to delay the impeachment. It shall happen around september though

That's what happens when you try "democratic socialism" while keeping the captains of capitalist industry in power: hoarding and smuggling goods abroad to create artificial scarcity while the U.S. props them up.

I saw President Nicolas Maduro at a grocery store in Caracas yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Doesn't matter, they're paid in meme money. Median wage is really worth around 20$.
