Italy was invaded by many people who, eventually, settled in the peninsula, and bred with locals. You can say modern italians are descended from romans, but not purely.
As I said previously; the modern Italian blood is latin (Etruscan, romans) and germanic (Ostrogoths, lombards, normans) populations. In the south you have also a presence of a strong genetic bond with greeks and turks.
