Jiust remember that the scoring system usually used is mean=100 sd=15 and none of that other shit.

Not putting myself down, I just don't find the online tests particularly validating when I've already scored sub-average on a real life test. Granted, it was when I was like 14 years old, but it still didn't do any favours to my self-esteem. I also had to work much harder than most of my friends back in university: I failed the first programming & math courses two and three times respectively. I guess it also has to do with being surrounded by much smarter people who tackle these courses with ease when you work day and night to tackle one fucking problem that you just can't figure out. Not really the sign of genius intellect.
I do believe intelligence can be trained and I'm certainly smarter than I was in my teens, but it did not come easily to me.

The fact that you will find that top tier chess players have way above average IQs confirms you that it is measuring something that is well correlated with anything that would fit any reasonable definition of intelligence.
Same thing goes for math and physics PhDs, or with Nobel prize winners.
IQ is a nice idea because instead of trying to define intelligence in the most objective way in order to measure it, a very hard task with hardly a solution, it tries to measure something that is well correlated with traits that any reasonable definition of intelligence would fit, and it succeeds relatively well at it.
